Using The Best Leather Shoe Care Products

By Jocelyn Davidson

People spend a lot of money for high quality, well fitting shoes. It comes as no surprise that caring for them properly becomes a priority for most who own them. Finding the very best leather shoe care products available can take time and energy. When using the trial and error method many individuals resort to asking for advice from people whose trade is caring for shoes. Another method of gathering this information might be internet research regarding how to care for the shoes.

There are certain basic items you will need to purchase if you are a novice at caring for shoes. Department stores often offer everything you need in a box designed to prop your foot on while polishing your shoes. The shine kits will provide you with the basic tools needed to keep your shoes looking good. Long term maintenance of them requires that additional products be used.

Polishes are part of the front line for protecting high quality shoes. This can be accomplished with liquid or wax polish. Waxes need to be brushed or rubbed to provide the sheen desired while liquids are designed to shine with no buffing or brushing. You will want to wear gloves while working on the shoes to prevent staining your hands with the dyes used in these items. Protection for your work surface is also recommended.

An immediate solution for solving issues with dirty or scuffed shoes can be found by using a shine cream. This product offers a quick means of cleaning and shining your shoes wherever you may be and can be helpful in work situations where you must look your best. This may not be helpful as a full time grooming tool because it gives no protection from water or the elements that harsh weather brings.

Using an oil to keep shoes soft and subtle is recommended. One oil that is available is mink oil renovator. Applied with a brush and allowed to soak in for twenty minutes or more before you use polish helps to ensure that your shoes look great, remain soft and resist cracking that develops with wear. Using an outdoor mink oil will water proof, clean and cover damage that may have occurred while wearing them.

Conditioning footwear during the off seasons helps to keep them in pristine condition while being stored. Conditioners are applied to the exterior surfaces of shoes and left to be absorbed over the months of storage. Conditioners are available at retail outlets or online.

Conditioners can be made with many different ingredients but the basics are lanolin, bees wax and coconut oil. These ingredients will make your shoes look like they did the day you purchased them. Some people make their own conditioners at home using a small amount of mild baby soap and warm water. This method is said to clean and nourish the fabric of your shoes without oil build up that may eventually damage shoes.

Caring for expensive footwear properly will prolong the life of shoes you love to wear but if this process proves to be too much for you there are shoe repair shops that will be happy to help you out.
