All About The Advanced Color Theory

By Patty Goff

The color theory is an extremely important aspect to any student who is taking up an arts course like graphic design or fine arts. Mixing colors and using them is one of the things that they will be doing in both their school lives and their work which is why this has to be taught. The entire lesson is divided into two parts namely the basic and the advanced color theory.

Just to give an idea for those who do not know, the basics would deal with the Color wheel that was first coined by Sir Isaac Newton. Basically, the wheel shows the different kinds of mixes of shades that would stem out from mixing the primary colors. The primary colors are red, yellow and blue and every other color is just a mix of these three.

Now in the advanced theories, one will now be learning now the more complicated ways on how to blend colors. It is in here that one will learn to make different shades based on the mixture. The five basic things that one will be learning about here would be hue, chromaticism, saturation, value, and luminance.

Now on the top of the list of concepts to learn, there would be the hue. The the three primary colors that were mentioned above can be distinguished by measurement of hue. The hue is actually just the amount of light that is emitted from colors and it measures the strength of these colors.

The next thing to learn about would be chromaticism which would describe how colorful a color actually is. The chromaticity of a pigment will actually depend on how strong its hue is. If it has a minimum hue, it will be more colorful but if it has a maximum hue, it leans more to the side of black, white, or gray.

The next thing that will be taught would be the saturation or in simple terms, the intensity. Now intensity simply means the amount of brightness that a certain shade produces and how strong it is to the eyes. Some colors that would have high saturation would be red, yellow, and other secondary colors that would contain these primary ones.

The next concept to learn would be the concept of value. Now the value is what will measure the actual brightness of colors. If one shade is brighter than the other, it is known to have a higher value than the one that is darker.

The final concept that would be taught is the concept of luminance. Now the measurement of luminance is actually connected to the value and the saturation except the luminance deals a lot with mathematical formulas with its measurements. The luminance is measured in intensity per unit and can be calculated by getting the average of a few colors.

So for those who are learning about the basics of color, this is what they will learn when going to a higher level. The first step would be learning about primary colors and mixing them. The advanced lessons will concentrate on the details of colors and the math.
