Discovering The Best LA Cover Bands

By Stacey Burt

Cubensis, is one of several award-winning musical groups in Los Angeles. While considered both cover and tribute band, Cubensis pays homage to the best of the Grateful Dead. Other LA Cover bands in the area include those covering everything from Black Sabbath to the Grateful Dead. While some of these groups like to stay local, others like to tour nationally and internationally.

While many of these bands play songs from a number of different famous acts, either from a group, era, or region, tribute bands often play entire albums, and full live shows at clubs and other venues. Just a few of these notable acts include Dark Star Orchestra, Lez Zeppelin, Pink Voyd and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's.

When it comes to tribute bands, there are those that play locally, nationally and internationally. Most often cover bands which play a variety of music from different bands and eras try to keep it local. Still, there are those whom even against such wishes find fame and fortune without intent. Two great examples of this would be Jersey Boys, and The Ultimate Frank Sinatra tribute band.

There are also those like the Hightailers, who play incredible Gulfcoast Rock and Roll, though also play music from other artists. The Hightailers are a staple in Houston, having played at Last Concert, a local restaurant and music venue, every Thursday for over 25 years. The band, restaurant and music venue have all won a number of Houston Press awards over the year. One of the most recent for the best Art Car Float in the annual Art Car parade in which the band played on a trailer being pulled by another complete with decorations, belly dancers, a hoola hooper and skaters.

Those desiring to hire live entertainment may want to realize that a smaller line-up that plays a variety of music, is often less expensive than a tribute. Generally, this is because of the additional expense involved in setting up a big stage, or concert like performance. One of the best at doing concert like theater productions is that of Pink Voyd, a Pink Floyd Cover group out of Boston, Massachusetts.

When most people think of groups which play covers, it does not always mean the band is dedicated to playing songs by only one group. In fact, most of these groups play a wide variety of music from different bands and eras. As such, there is generally one which can appeal to at least one individual and demographic.

Others like The Hightailers and Knight Ryder often have regular bookings at local clubs and restaurants. Knight Ryder is a local group that performs a wide range of hits from the 80s. The Hightailers, a gulf-coast rock and roll band has been playing every Thursday at one of Houston's most historic Mexican restaurant and music venues. As with Houston, Los Angeles also has an active live music scene while most people tend to think of it more as a film, and recording studio paradise.

When a group lives and works in Los Angeles, the sky is often the limit when it comes to finding a gig. For people seeking to book live entertainment, this is not always the case. A new website called GigMasters hopes to remedy this issue. After which, it will be far easier for bands and booking agents to connect, whether online or over the phone.
