Dina Shubin And Her Art

By Kristen Baird

A certain artist has developed an appreciative following for the way in which she paints. She has found an interesting blend of realism and abstract that serves to create a particular feeling when looking at her work. This artist is Dina Shubin. Her desire is to express the divinity of women and her paintings manage to convey tranquility but at the same time these women have a goddess-like, powerful quality.

Dina was born in Moscow and studied art at the Moscow Teachers Training Institute before emigrating to Canada. She is married to fellow artist Peter Panov. They have very different styles but are both extremely talented. Peter enjoys creating everyday life scenes and unforgettable characters. Both of these artists have exhibited their paintings in many large cities.

One is reminded of ancient icons and the power they convey when one looks at the way Dina poses her subjects. Her figures are elongated rather than realistically portrayed. The backgrounds are abstract and contrast with the realistic way in which she paints the flesh of the women. In the techniques she uses we see reflections of famous artists like Modigliani, Giotto and Klimt but she combines them in a way that is uniquely hers.

This contrast of realism and abstraction gives her works a tension that lifts them above the ordinary. These women are real women with real flesh and yet they have a serenity and divinity about them. Their elongated forms transform them into mythical, goddess-like creatures.

Her paintings have a romantic quality to them too and the women are often portrayed together with elements related to the senses. Flowers find a way into many of her works. This may be in the form of a beautifully painted vase of tulips or a few white lilies. Her women also play different musical instruments such as cellos, guitars, harps and flutes.

The women are painted in static poses and may even have their arms folded and yet they still manage to convey power at the same time. A woman sits on a window seat resting her arms on her knees. She is completely still and yet powerful and serene. Another woman in a rowing boat dips her hand into the water and in this scene of perfect tranquility yet the woman still conveys a goddess like quality.

Backgrounds are often painted in rich, deep colors like ochre, dark red and rusts. Against these rich, rough abstract backgrounds, the soft flesh tones stand out and convey a feeling of tenderness. The vases of flowers and the musical instruments are painted in realistic detail, appearing even clearer against the abstract background. Intricately painted veils are also included in some paintings, adding to the divinity and ethereal quality of these women.

Art lovers are always excited when this artist adds new paintings to her portfolio. Her paintings are available from a number of online galleries today. Shopping online for such a painting gives one the option of the browsing through many paintings before making a selection. Buying one of these paintings is an investment and this fact is recognized by many collectors today.
