Why You Should Always Wear Safety Glasses

By Annabelle Holman

Working on a construction site comes with so many hazards and thus the usage of protective gears are a must. One protection that can benefit the highly risky and almost insignificantly hazardous jobs are safety glasses. Even though an office job seems like a boring job, it has also proven to be risky too, for this reason some kind of protection is also important.

It is estimated that many eye injuries occur yearly that could have been prevented by the use of this personal protective equipment. The main purpose of these glasses are safety and prevention. If you are working with tools that produce airborne particles then you are especially prone to eye injuries.

These particles can be sawdust at the mill, bits of metal at a construction site, sparks from welding and corrosive chemicals during a task at the lab and the list goes on. There are even cases of accidents caused by flying objects. So if next time you ask your colleague to throw something to you, make sure you have your glasses on just in case.

The outcome of an accident can vary from temporary to permanent blindness in one or both eyes. The injuries can be mild ones, like light scratching of the lenses to aggravated deterioration of the layer of the eye. Working in a lab has its own high risks. An accident involving chemicals can only lead to a worst case scenario injury.

Approximately 20% of eye related accidents result in vision lost. If you are lucky it will be only temporary, but if not you won't be able to see ever again. So wear the protective equipment. Additionally, always make sure you are wearing the right gear for the right task, many times, the wrong personal protective equipment cause the accidents.

When somebody accepts a job, he/she knows about the implied risks he/she is taking on. This is particularly so if the worker comes with years of experience. This doesn't mean you can take it lightly thinking "I always do my job correctly and safely", so why now. This won't make you immune to mistakes made by colleagues.

Computers are a common addition to any office and it is unimaginable to have an efficient workplace without at least one. The screen, or more specifically the light rays from or heat from the screen will always be the focus of heated debate regarding its risks. At one point, a protective layer was put over the screen. Although technical developments made screen way safer, many people choose to use protective spectacles which reduced the brightness of any particular computer screen at a point in time.

Then there are special protective spectacles for highly dangerous jobs, like welding. In these cases the glasses are incorporated in a full shield to minimize the risks of accidents. In addition, if you are also using prescription ones in your daily life, special protective glass can be made that incorporate both lenses.

As you can see, a spectacle with extra safety features has a wide range of applicability and this was just the tip of the iceberg. There are several more ways and even more jobs, where these glasses can prevent serious accidents from happening both saving you and the quality of life you are leading. It is better to be safe than sorry.
