Immediacy, physicality, and presence among other elements of the experience are enhanced through stagecraft and design elements. Another definition for theatre is a collection of different kinds of art presented through different methods to an audience. The Greek language is the origin of the word. Infact, ancient Greek drama is the source of most elements like technical terminology and classification of arts into various genres in modern theaters.

The process of producing a piece of art or theatre involves parties from different professions. Some of the most commonly involved professionals are directors, actors, playwrights, and a technical production team. The technical production team comprises of sound designers, production managers, stage managers, lighting designers, set designers, video designers, dramaturg, fight directors, and stage composers. The collaborative efforts of all these professionals are put together to produce the final art ready for presentation to the audience.

Stagecraft is a term used to refer to all video, film, and theatrical aspects involved in the production process. It covers such aspects as makeup, stage management, hanging and focusing of lights, construction and rigging of scenery, sound mixing and recording, and procurement of props. Design and procurement of costumes also falls under stagecraft. Normally stagecraft is handled by a single professional although in modern days, this is changing fast.

Drama is normally combined together with dance and music. The musicals may comprise both songs and spoken dialogue. Theatrical music has been part of theatre since a long time ago because they have both had a close relationship.

Modern music theatre combines different elements such as dance, spoken dialogue, and music to pass information to the audience. It emerged during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The emergence rooted from genres like comic opera, music hall, vaudeville, and variety practiced during the two centuries. Comedies use humor as the main mean of telling stories to people. If the theatre deliberately expresses controversial, taboo, or bleak subject in a humorous way, it is referred to as black comedy.

Theatres are owned by companies and at times individuals. Most companies produce, perform, run, and then retire a piece of work before starting another other. Other companies however, rehearse several shows at once. A piece of work is played severally upon request by audiences before being retired. Such companies are referred to as repertory companies.

There are many unions in this industry too. There are unions for actors, directors, managers, and other professionals. Staff is required by most theaters to be members to the unions.
