By Lila Berger

Silk painting on fabrics is an easy way to design your own fabrics. It is not a hard thing to do and most people can read a how to guide and be able to accomplish the task. You do not need expensive silk painting supplies to start and thus your financial status should not be a challenge. Once you learn however, you can invest in some good equipment that brings out the quality in your production to make you better at the job.

Before you venture in mass production, find out how paint reacts with the material. Practice how to apply different designs on the fabric. Dye is hard to control as it spreads faster than paint. However, it gives better results and once you master how to apply it, you can produce colored cloths of high quality.

The other difference between paint and dye is that most of paints are opaque and you can correct mistakes made while painting by using more. Not so for users of dye which is transparent and a mistake made anywhere cannot be corrected by adding more layers to it. Most people just include the error into the design by getting creative.

Before you can start painting, you need to prepare the fabric and paints to be used. Take time and draw a sketch of the pattern or image you want to paint on the cloth. Make sure the sketch is proportional and helps you have a mental picture of what the image you wish to paint. Have the fabric stretched on a frame to help you get a sharp image. It is also advisable to prepare your paints before you can start your work. This makes you work easier as compared to when you have to do the mixing during painting.

If you are using dye, the most important part is to control how it spreads on the fabric. Usually, resin substances are used with skill to prevent the dye from spreading to unwanted areas. The resin is removable through washing and thus does not harm the cloth. Most people prefer using the applicator bottle to get the job done.

This is done with care to avoid saturation. It is advisable to apply little amounts of the dye at the centre of the area you want to paint. The dye spreads on the fabric to the resist lines. If you use a lot of dye, the resin will not be of any use. This will spoil your original design and your work will not appear neat. If not carefully done, the fabric can be spoilt and this will lead to losses.

One more thing you need to understand is the art of mixing colors. This allows you to stretch your imagination beyond the scope of the guy at the factory. It is also a good way to meet unique needs of your different clients.

Once you have successfully applied the dye, you need to make it stick to fabric permanently such that it does not come out during washing. This process is called setting the color or fixing the dye. In practice, chemical fixatives are used to achieve better results. However, using hot iron or drying the material over several days can give the desired results. In this business of silk painting supplies, mastery of production skills is import in ensuring your success.
