3 Things To Look At When Searching For The Perfect Vocals

By Delroy Wilkins

Two of the things that make hip hop a popular music genre are the beats and lyrical entertainment. It demands hard work and practice to make a break in this industry given the number of producers and hip hop artists out there. If you are a beat producer and have the perfect beat with the right groove, you will need to find the perfect vocalist to ensure that you end up creating a hit hip hop track. Here are 3 things to consider when searching for the perfect MC to rap along to your beats and instrumentals.

Where can you find the right vocal talent? Search for the right vocal talent both locally and internationally. Lyrical talent is often discovered at an early age as kids rhyme to songs. By the time the child becomes an adult, they can easily create a rhyme. Rappers can be found locally and you will have to advertise your need for a lyricist. Keep the adverts appealing to ensure that you get the best talent for your beats and instrumentals. If you cannot find the perfect vocalist locally, you can use the internet to search for international rappers. Technology has made it possible for music producers and vocalists to work together without having to be in the same location. You can use VOIP software to manage music recording from remote locations. Some rappers will even have their own recording equipment making the music production easier.

Your goal when searching for the right vocal talent should be to find the voice that best complements your beats and instrumentals. Focus on the tone of the voice, the quality and flow. In addition look at the entertainment and relevance of the lyrics with regard to the beat you create. You should also consider the rhythm of the lyrics since rappers tend to have their own rhythm when singing along to specific beats.

What should the vocal talent offer?ccA great hip hop track will have awesome beats. However, without the right vocal talent, the beat won't be enough to convince an audience to listen to your track. When looking for vocal talent, you should strive to find a serious person. Don't work with time wasters and ensure that the vocal talent knows the terms of the contract. Have a written agreement and ensure that the vocalist knows what is expected of them as well as what you have to offer. If you think that the lyricist can make changes to improve the track, don't be afraid to point them out. Go for more than one take even of you believe that the vocalist made the first take perfectly. You should also be prepared to deal with egos clashing during recording.

What equipment will your vocalist require? Basically, all you need is a mic, any mic and a pop shield. Don't sweat the small stuff and this goes for equipment. When you are just starting out, go for any mic that you can afford, the performance outweighs the quality at this point and if you have got a star this would not really matter. Aside from the mic, the pop shield is a must have. You should be working with people who project their voices and for those people, a pop shield is necessary. There are cheap ones for sale but you can go for a makeshift pop shield by stretching a piece of tights over a coat hanger or a tv aerial. When you have got the pop shield and the mic, pay attention to the angle and the distance of both, get those headphones on that would surely help in finding the right position.
