By Lana Bray

When in necessity of studying martial arts Marietta is the correct place to consider first. Martial arts are codified traditions and/or systems of combat exercises. The art initially originated from Chinese communities where it was exercised about 4000 years ago. The word is from Latin language, and when translated to English it means Arts of Mars. Mars referred to the god of war in the Roman Empire.

Even though the word martial arts is currently heavily associated with fighting systems of Eastern Asia, it was initially used in regard to combat systems of Europe. People practice these systems for different reasons. Major ones include competition, entertainment, self-defense, physical fitness and health, and spiritual, physical, or mental development. In entertainment, artists include styles derived from the art in their clips to attract crowds. Some practice them on stage before their audiences.

There are many groups into which martial art is classified basing on various criteria. The first group involves the traditional or historic and modern styles. Historic styles are mainly utilized in folk wrestling whereas the modern ones get application in contemporary hybrid art. The next category is based on the area of origin. It groups them into those, which originated from Western nations and those from the Eastern nations of the world.

The third group is based on the type of techniques learners are taught. The techniques taught can either involve unarmed or armed fighters. In the group of armed fighters, major techniques taught comprise swordsmanship and stick fighting. In the group of unarmed combat, techniques taught include ground fighting, striking, grappling, and stand-up fighting.

The fourth group is based on the intention of training. Training is given depending on the intent for involvement of a person. Intentions may fall under these categories, that is, demonstration of forms, combat sport, meditation, self-defense, choreography, and physical fitness. The last group is used only within the republic of China. In this group, the techniques are grouped basing on whether they originated from within the republic or from outside.

In the unarmed group, learners could be taught skills that majorly aim at striking the opponent. Some schools teach grappling skills whereas others teach both skills in combination. A combination of both skills is known as hybrid martial arts. Attacking styles further specialize in kicking, punching, or both. Punching specialty includes karate, boxing, and Wing Chun. Kicking division includes Savate, Kickboxing, Tang Soo Do, and Taekwondo. Grappling includes pinning techniques, throwing, and joint locks, submission holds, or chokes.

Weapon based art teaches learners on the safe use of a wide variety of weapons particularly swords and sticks. Some training schools incorporate archery classes in their curriculum. All these groups can be exercised in competitive sport, where practitioners train for purposes of sports. When used in this way, practitioners are needed to use little or no impact on opponents. Points are given when one makes contact.

When in need of knowing more about martial arts Marietta presents the right place to check out. There are many schools that teach the various forms of the art in Marietta. One can enroll any time and have their training altered to meet their schedules.
