The Iconic And Famous Photographers In NYC

New York City and Paris are two of the greatest Meccas for photography. New York City is the home of hip and often dark street photography and some of the world's important and most famous photographers in NYC and the history of the medium. These include, Diane Arbus, Joel Meyerowitz, William Klein, Garry Winogrand, Nan Goldin and Steven Klein.

Diane Arbus is considered one of the most important photographers of all time. Her compassionate study of people on the margins of society have yielded some of the world's most famous photographs. She referred to those she photographed as "aristocrats" and claimed that they had already passed their test in life. He shot in monochrome using the square aspect ratio of the Hasselblad camera.

Joel Meyerowitz is a New York street photographer who was one of the first photographers to start photographing in color film in 1962. His photographs capture the essence of New York's streets in vivid detail. He shoots his street work on 35mm film but also photographs on 8x10 large format film. He was the only photographer to be allowed to photograph ground zero after 9/11.

Garry winogrand is possibly the most iconic street photographer of New York City. He prowled the streets with his Leica capturing moments in black and white that reflected the social issues of 1960s New York. He took thousand of photographs, many of which became very famous. His style can be very disturbing, uncompromising and challenging; showing the real face of New York.

Garry Winogrand is the archetypal New York street photographer and his dark and uncompromising images are known throughout he world. He roamed the streets of New York with his Leica camera and 35mm monochrome film capturing the social issues of 1960s New York. He has taken thousands of photographs during his career.

Nan Goldin moved to New York City in the 1970s and began photographing the punk scene that was emerging in the city, along with underground gay communities. She also documented the hard drug subculture of the Bowery area that became The Ballad of Sexual Dependency", which is her most famous work. Goldin's photographs are a real walk on the wild side in the city of New York and her snapshot aesthetic gave her photographs an edgy feel as she was personally involved with her subjects.

Steven Klein is a New York based fashion photographer who produced high-profile advertising photographs during the 1980s. He has worked with some of the biggest names in fashion, including Vogue, ID and Arena. He is most well known for his editorial photographs of Madonna, Brad Pit and Tom Ford. His work is highly conceptual with models dressed in strange clothes posing in an unusual way.

These famous photographers in pushed the boundaries of the medium and exposed otherwise unseen aspects of life and pushed forward new ways of composing images. The Museum of Modern Art in New York City regularly exhibits fine art photography from these and other fine art photographers, and was the first art gallery in the world to exhibit photography. This makes New York one of the most important cities in the history of fine art photography.
