How Woven Labels Become Part Of The Garment

By Claire Bolton

Clothes have always been held not only as necessities but also luxuries. Many centuries ago the average people only had a single outfit which they wore every day. And the outfit was nothing fancy. The rich could afford much more. So clothes took a relatively long time to make. To have garments identified was a standard in life. With the introduction of the industrial revolution garments became to be much easier to make. People began having extra changes of clothes. This soon brought on the need to put label on the garments. The height of this is woven labels.

The industrial revolution ushered in a creativity which had not been experienced before. Natural fibers such as linen, wool, and cotton could be knitted and woven into garments. Polyester and other man made fibers could be processed into clothes. Many fibers had different characteristics. Elongation, moisture content, and shrinkage are only a few examples. When adding this to the types and variations in manufacturing types there could be a host of variables that could affect clothing. This meant they could not all have the same cleaning approach.

Garment labels became necessities because owners needed help knowing how to take care of their clothes. This, for example, made sure a wool sweater would not be too after a washing. Additionally they would contain information on size. This was helpful as department stores became more popular. In fact, clothing stores were successful because customers could easily find clothing sizes.

A label was initially an afterthought. The clothing was initially the main focus. So the labels would be cheap in appearance when compared to the actual clothing. The labels could also be uncomfortable, irritating the neck or other parts of the body. So often they would be removed. The garment size and care information would be lost forever.

A screen print label is easy to make as well as inexpensive. The woven types may not as inexpensive as the screen prints, but they surely are not cheap. When customers review garments they are more likely to get better feelings when high quality labels are on them.

Any label manufactured through weaving process will have greater shape stability. The care and size information provided will weather multiple cleanings. Screen prints will deteriorate and become hard to read. A woven label connected to well made garments become valuable heirlooms. They could be carried down through multiple family generations with the ability to be kept in pristine condition.

Label information and designs are created by graphic designs specialists. Any design that can be imagined can be created. A design is saved as a file and downloaded into modern textile looms. The information is able to be woven on both label sides.

Woven labels continue to make their mark through enhancing clothes. As fashion designers and apparel manufacturers seek to set themselves above others, there will be greater desires to use them more creatively. Whether triangular, rectangular, or square, they will continue adding extra fashion dimensions to clothing.
