Speed Up Your Music Production Time

By Frank Lubsey

One of the things that are important as a producer is speed. Creativity is something that happens quickly. If you've ever experienced a flash of inspiration, you realized that at times, it seems like a brief window to another world has been opened. However, this window does not stay open forever and if too much time passes, it will close. Thus, as a producer, it is important to work quickly and with speed in order to save time. Today, we're going to discuss some time saving techniques that will make you a more time efficient producer.

Templates: After beat making for a while, you'll probably develop a suite of sounds and settings that you really like for your track. Create a template for your vsts and sound settings in your DAW. Some DAWs allow you to do this explicitly, or, you can just create a project in your DAW, load your instruments and settings, and then save it with a file name of your choice.

Custom Drum Kits: Without a doubt, one of the most time-consuming parts of a hip-hop production involves finding and tweaking the right drum sounds. Why go through this process every time you make a new track when you can build a set of drum sounds that go well together and save it as a drum kit? Then, the next time you make a beat, you simply load one of the drum kits you've created and save yourself much time.

Categorizing: It's helpful to organize your sounds into different categories that you are familiar with. Some VSTs come with preset categories that make it easier to search, while with other vsts, you may need to invent your own. In either case, having categories saves you time by not having to audition every sound under the sun. How granular you get is up to you. For example, you can have a category called "Pads". However, you can really save time by having "Gated Pads", "Warm Pads", "Evolving Pads" etc. The whole key is to make it easier to find the sound in your head when you are looking for it.

Versioning: Another time saving technique is what I call versioning. If you have a beat that you like and you feel the sounds in your beat really complement each other, make a similar sounding beat that uses the same instruments. In other words, make another version of the beat. How similar the version of the beat is to the original song is up to you. You can make it very similar, or you can have completely different musical phrases and rhythms but use the same instruments. The idea is that it cuts down time because you are already using instruments that you know complement each other so it saves you some production time.

When producing a track, speed is of the utmost importance. Before you make your next beat, try incorporating the techniques above to speed up the production process.
