Looking For The Best Hip Hop Blog

By Kelsey Benson

As rap music is amongst the most powerful cultural movements in the world today. An influence on fashion, films and all elements of the record industry, it is unsurprising that it takes up plenty of the space online too. There is plenty of debate about which is the best hip hop blog out there. Really it is a subjective call. To find out which blog suits your taste best, here are some of the most popular.

Bossip.com is one of the most often clicked hip hop sites around and when you look at the home page you can see why. It's a sleek, slick and overall very well executed affair. As well as dealing with rap music and all its many subgenres and sister genres, it also deals with political stories and other cultural happenings of interest to the African American community.

Another high quality, slick site is Concrete Loop. Whereas Bossip aims its net at a broader span of topics, Concrete Loop is firmly fixed on music and, for up to date videos and news, it is hard to argue against. Fashion is also a big part of its remit, though again this will mostly be how it corresponds to the music scene.

For those who want to engage in a colourful, informed debate about rap music, it is well worth checking out Street Dose. Set up by Shem Anthony, a rap promoter from New Jersey, the news section is loaded with informative content tailor made to spur lively comments in the comment section. It's a great place to talk rap with real fans of the movement and genre.

Daddy's Hangout offers a far different flavour than the more news orientated blogs. Here a proud father discusses his three favourite things - hip hop, his kids and sports - and others are encouraged to join in. It has a really great music section with lots of information and talk about the hottest new releases and old school classics. Not as journalistic in tone as Concrete Loop or Bossip but with an engaging informality that makes it well worth a look.

Atlanta rapper Senor Kaos runs his The Kaos Effect blog as both a wickedly effective self-promotion tool and a zone for him to spread news and views on all things rap, technology and business. It's an energetic read with lots of bragging and self-promotion but also plenty of real information. It also offers some good advice for people looking to break into the business.

For something a little less music-orientated - i. E. For those of you more interested in the celebrities associated with the music than the music itself - you might try Gossip On This. Its mainly interested in, as you would imagine, gossip. It's funny, well written and one of the best spots to keep up with the comings and goings of rap moguls like Jay-Z, P-Diddy, Souljah Boy, Lil Wayne and Usher.

Find the best hip hop blog is never going to be about reading a list and picking the name you like most. You have to actually visit them and see them for yourself. These are just a few of the blogs available online. Have a look around and find the one which suits your view on the rap scene.
