The Importance Of Screenwriter Tools In Film

By Mark Phillips

As most writers know, one of the most difficult areas to break into is that of film and television. While this is the case, there are some screenwriter tools and software applications which can help writers of all levels. In fact, there are some which can take individuals from the beginning of a project to completion.

One of a number of software applications and screenwriting tools, Celtx, allows writers to access and move through script changes more quickly than without such software. For, the software assist writers and producers with a number of planning tools from creation and editing to shooting schedules.

When it comes to Celtx, the first step is known as Concept to Complete. While the package involves writing, breaking down scripts and creating a storyboard, the writer provides the content. As such, unlike other writing programs which often provide a storyline, character build up, and plot, this software only assist writers with regards to the technical aspects of a project.

While this may sound challenging, the easy to use software is one of the easiest applications to learn. For, the software is designed to facilitate real-time collaboration among all those working on a project. For, before such tools were available, writers, directors and producers in the past had to wait on delivery of a script before making edits and revisions. As a result, Celtx and other similar software applications and tools now help movie makers stay within often tight budgetary guidelines.

One other great feature for anyone working on a script is having the ability to work anywhere in the world on any device. In fact, there are number of writers and producers whom now work on multiple projects at the same time thanks to this feature. As a result, editors, writers and actors have the ability to discuss ideas, revisions and thoughts on a daily basis. Whereas, if a crew is shooting on location, it can be easier to stay in contact with others back at the studio.

Whether using Celtx or other free writing software and tools, the steps are often the same. Generally, the process starts with a screenwriter telling a story, or in the case of a documentary, a vision. After which, the pre-production process begins. When using an application or screenwriting tool, writers often find it easier to organize ideas and thoughts regardless of the type of project.

In the storyboard phase, writers most often use this time to communicate the message with regards to the vision for a project. In addition, many also use this time to block shots and mark location shots for cameras, set up lighting and place cast in positions along with setting up designs. Whereas, the time remaining is often used to obtain props, wardrobes, equipment, confirm set locations and notify crew when ready to begin shooting.

Finally, creating a list of proposed shots for production, planning the shot type, angle and movement and assuring cast is on hand is the final step in preparation. After which, scheduling shooting dates, locations and keeping cost in check is essential to a successful project. Once all of these issues have been addressed, it is time to start filming.
