Locating An Online Performing Artist Community

By Susan Campbell

There are a number of social networking websites which hosts information for individuals interested in the arts. Many in the online performing artist community have been using these sites for information and to establish a presence on the web. Whether an individual is interested in art, dance, music, poetry, theater or other areas of the art world these networking oriented websites have a lot to offer.

Individuals may also want to look for local organizations which focus on a specific art such as dance or music. These sites often provide information on local events, performances and venues. In some cases, these social networking sites will also allow members to communicate with one another on discussion boards and forums.

Like Facebook, Twitter and other social networking platforms, these local organizations often allow individuals to create a profile, post comments and share events. Other features include posts from conductors, dance studios, teachers, theater staff, directors and others. One of the most commonly used aspects of these sites is that of audio and video content which musicians and fans can view online.

Online radio stations have also become more prevalent since the inception of the internet. Sites like Last.fm and others are powered solely by listeners. As such, listeners are rarely disappointed with announcements, set-lists or song choices. Whereas, it can often be difficult to locate a traditional radio station which only plays music that is liked by all whom listen.

Individuals interested in choral or vocal oriented music can also find information online. While not as prevalent as that of classical and other styles, there are some organizations which work to help those in choral groups. One of the best networking sites for these individuals is that of ChoralNet which provides a forum discussion board, a list of choral organizations, events, performance schedules and news.

Dance is an area in which there are a number of social networking websites. In addition, local communities often host dedicated websites for dancers and those interested in obtaining information on performances. Some of these include Barefoot Boogie, Dance Freedom and Dance New England which offer summer dance camps and regular dance jams. Whereas, there are also a number of national organizations dedicated to dance which can be found online.

There are also organizations inclusive of all the arts. Some of these are the Minneapolis Artists Collective, The McKnight Foundation and the Walker Art Center New Media Initiatives Group. The New England Foundation for the Arts can provide a directory of local artists in all categories.

Whether an artist painting a masterpiece, an actor, a dancer, or a musician, these sites can help artists in different ways. As some organizations have been around for years and others are new, it is often good to search the web to find more information on an organization. To do so, type the name of the organization into any search engine, then click on any links of interest.
