How Christian Rock Charlotte Came To Be

By Daphne Bowen

During this era, it is very common to see a band labeled as a Christian rock band by the lyrics mixed with harsh vocals and a rough guitar rift. Of course before it became common, it underwent a lot of controversies due to the conservative nature of the church and its followers during that time. Of course nowadays Christian Rock Charlotte is thriving very much and is becoming more and more popular due to the appearance of many bands out there.

Now just to give people a quick background, the church has been very much against rock music in general because they believe that the influence of this genre of music was ritual music performed by the Africans. Of course at that time, most rockstars would sing about sexual themes or even violence during those days which made everything worse. Now during that time, there were some unconventional rockstars that decided to mix the genre up with some gospel lyrics.

One of the pioneers of this kind of music would be the band that is known as the Crusaders. The Crusaders were not very popular at first due to the mindset of most Christians during that time. However, they did have their own set of followers and eventually became more popular as time passed.

Although the Crusaders were among the first to spread the genre, it was Larry Norman who was the one who really popularized the sub genre. He was a musician and lyricist who was looked upon by a lot of artists during that time and became one of the core influences of many bands today. It was because of this man that the sub genre was slowly able to seep into the secular music world and became more well known by many.

During the time that glam rock and metal became famous, one striking band known as Stryper made its appearance. They were a glam band that talked about their religion and how proud they were about it. They are the ones that almost completely dominated the secular music world as not only Christians listened to them but non Christians as well.

In the eighties, the music world was dominated by the presence of thrash metal bands with the big four being Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer. During the late eighties, one band came out with a Christian label known as Tourniquet and became popular for their thrash sound. In fact, they were also compared to the big four but were never placed there because of the complexity in their music.

This sub genre became very popular when the nineties came. Alternative and punk bands emerged in this sub genre and captured the hearts of many. Many bands in fact became mainstream because of their popularity.

Until today, many more bands are coming out and making a name for themselves. In fact, the growth of this type of music is known to be one of the most impressive. If one would in fact travel to Charlotte SC, he will see so many small bands starting out.
