By Jerry K. Lewinski

At one point in time, Hip Hop producers did not necessarily need to know about every aspect of the process involved with putting an album together. They were able to get by focusing primarily on the recording process. However, music producers new role in the music industry dictates that they must wear many hats, and be familiar with all of the aspects of the business.

In the last several years, the recording industry has changed a lot. Internet marketing and music downloads have eclipsed the sales of physical records and the importance of record stores. Even traditional radio is not as influential as it once was. The digital revolution has transformed the industry's whole landscape.

As the music business in general has changed, so has the producer's role. A music producer must be able to handle and enhance many different aspects of a performer's career. These are a few of the various roles a good producer must expertly play. A producer's job is not limited to these things, but they are probably the most important factors.

1. Recording engineer. A music producer needs to stay on top of the latest recording technology, and also needs to know which tried and true techniques should be preserved. Part of your job as a producer is to advise the artists when they are making decisions and to know how to bring out the best sound from their raw material. This has always been one of the producer's functions, and it always will be.

2. A musician. It is important for anyone in a management position to know about the jobs that they supervise. The best producers are musicians themselves, which helps them to advise their artists from a knowledgeable standpoint. Knowing about the raw music, which is the basic building block for the polished recording, will be incredibly beneficial, and will give the artists more respect for your opinions.

3. A & R executive. Artist and repertoire is the aspect of the business that involves searching out new talent, and helping both new and established talent to grow artistically. An A & R executive supervises the evolution of an album during the recording process, and serves as a bridge between the record company and the artist.

4. Marketing expert. In the age of the internet, marketing is more complicated than it was when it simply involved ad campaigns, press releases, and interviews. Now, social networking is an extremely important marketing tool. A good Hip Hop producer should be able to help artists develop a brand, advise them on their handling of social media, and also advise them on public image in situations like interviews or tv appearances. Marketing is a 24-hour-a-day job.

These are just a few of the hats that music producers must wear. In an industry that is constantly changing, there are new responsibilities and issues arising every day for producers to deal with. Staying abreast of these changes is one of the most important things you can do as a professional. You should always be striving to understand new dimensions of the work that you do and the industry in which you do it.
