Proposing The Acceptance Of Marijuana Through The Grow Jamaica Movie

By Elena McDowell

The Grow Jamaica movie is based on a book written by co authors Leeroy Campbell and Janice Campbell. The book which serves as an inspiration for the film advocates the formal recognition of all the numerous benefits the plant has to offer. These benefits are hinted at on the text's front cover with the words, food, fuel fiber and medicine. The same arguments are used to advocate cannabis acceptance in the film.

The clout behind the film itself is reinforced by the caliber of its cast. It comprises the ideal mix of talent and fame. Some of the famous faces that appear in the film include Oliver Samuels, one of Jamaica's most celebrated actors, Stephen Marley, Reggae artist and son of the world famous Robert Nesta (or Bob) Marley and co author of the inspirational text Leeroy Campbell.

There is a wider campaign geared at raising awareness of the good things that can come from the plant. This campaign includes web promotion, musical promotion and written essays and texts. The film is one aspect of this broader campaign. It is an important phase though since it appeals to a wide variety of viewers in an age of viewing.

The use of Marijuana, which is known as cannabis and for the local Jamaican population, herb, is not legal on the island. This is typically a shocking revelation for many outsiders who have come to associate the island with smoking the controversial plant. There is a group of advocates however, who are encouraging the island's legislators to decriminalize its use.

The structure of the film reflects the diversity of the plant itself. It is basically a documentary designed to inform enlighten and entertain at the same time. It consist of a number of interviews, some executed on the streets of Jamaica to give an idea of how the layman views the plant. Others are conducted in offices and in residential communities with middle to upper class interviewees who represent expert opinions on the subject of decriminalization.

The thought provoking documentary lasts sixty minutes. For those who wish to view it at their convenience, it is also available in DVD format. This makes it easy for anyone who wants to use it at a group meeting or promotional event to use it. Those who wish to use it for educational purposes may also do so by using the DVD format.

The ultimate aim of the producers is to promote the realization of Dr. Leeroy Campbell's ideal revolution, envisioned and explored in his text. This revolution is geared at making the plant so much a part of life in the Jamaican society that it is freely produced and used. The dream is to see the plant de-shackled from the legal and social boundaries that currently exist.

There is no doubt that the Grow Jamaica movie has the potential to positively influence the marijuana legalization campaign. The message that it conveys is bound to captivate even the most unwilling viewer. This is due to the fact that the producers take a holistic and multifaceted approach to the topic.
