Big Band Orchestra Music Is Still Very Popular Today

By Traci Roberts

Nothing gets your foot tapping like the sound of days gone by with a Big Band orchestra. The sounds of the '40s, '50s and into the '70s come alive with those who play the music of Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and so many more.

Orchestras all around the country play this music, some small and some large with a variety of accompanists. And some popular musicians such as Michael Buble and Harry Connick, Jr. Keep the sounds in the forefront of today's musical world.

Just like the days of dance clubs, there are clubs featuring this music today. In large cities as well as small towns, you can listen to it live at concert halls or dance the evening away in a small local club.

Actually Big Bands date back to around 1935 with the start of the Swing Era. Much jazz is also included in Big Band music. It raised the morale of troops and all Americans during the second World War while becoming popular in Europe as well. Many of the bands and their leaders traveled in the USO. In fact, Glen Miller died while traveling between USO shows.

This music lives on today. There are radio stations most everywhere that play the sounds from back then. Records from the era are popular among collectors. New CDs, taken from old recordings are sold in abundance.

You do not have to look far to turn on these sounds. On the radio, stereo and jukeboxes at home or local hangouts, the music of a Big Band orchestra can be heard. It is played live in back street dives and major concert halls. It reminds us of a slower paced time, albeit in a world of turmoil. Read more about: big band orchestra
